Take a ride on the Georgetown Railroad

Looking for more family fun ideas? Another great day trip would be to the Georgetown Loop Railroad In Georgetown, CO. The Georgetown Loop Railroad was one of Colorado’s first visitor attractions. Completed in 1884, this spectacular stretch of three-foot narrow gauge railroad was considered an engineering marvel for its time and is connected with the Lebanon Silver Mine.

The train tour takes about 1 hour and 15 minutes round trip and gives breath taking scenic views of the Clear Creek area and the additional Silver Mine Tour is an additional 1 hour and 15 minutes and includes a walk through the Silver Mine, the tour guide will give you lots of information about the mine and its history, but if you do decide to take a mine tour you may want to bring a jacket as the average temperature is 44 degrees Fahrenheit.

There are two trains which operate a Diesel powered and a steam powered and the price differs depending on which train you take, however, the steam powered train comes with complimentary soft drinks and snacks served during the trip. The prices range from $22.50 per adult and $16.50 per child (3-15, under 3 are free with each paying adult) for the diesel train and are $29.50 per adult and $23.50 per child for the steam powered train. The mine tour is an additional $8 for adults and an additional $6.50 for children. In addition to the regular season, the Georgetown Loop Railroad caters special events like 4th of July firework spectaculars and, if you want to ditch the kids, a Wine & Hors D’Oeuvres special and a Moonlight in the Mountains event ( as well as others). Georgetown also has a variety of shops, restaurants and museums (including a Hotel De Paris Museum) to help pack the day with fun and adventure.

To get to the mine, just take I-70 east towards Denver. Then take exit 228 towards Georgetown and turn right off the exit ramp, take the first right onto Argentine Street, left on 11th Street and then the second right onto Taos St. Follow Taos down to the Georgetown Loop Railroad and viola, you are there.
