Cross Country Skiing in Summit County

Nordic or Cross Country Skiing is a very popular sport in Summit County. With large expansive terrains to glide over, Nordic Skiing allows adventurers the opportunity to see areas in the mountains that are otherwise inaccessible (except by walking). Nordic Skiing is a very energy taxing activity and thus it is a great cardio workout and there are many places in Summit County to go cross country skiing.

Breckenridge is home to some of the most gorgeous areas in Summit County like the White River National Forest Sunshine, which sprawls between the Ten-mile Range and the Continental Divide. Trails wind through the woods, up mountainsides and sometimes through old mining ruins. Exploring the Rocky Mountains while on cross-country skis ensures spectacular views, a chance to visit with friends and family.

Many ungroomed trails thread the forests and mountainsides in Summit County. There’s also hut-to-hut skiing, thanks to huts that are part of the Tenth Mountain Hut System located in Summit County. Some cross-country skiers do venture into the backcountry—but this should only be done with trained guides or by experienced backcountry skiers. The avalanche danger in Colorado’s backcountry is to be taken seriously. So only those with knowledge of safe backcountry travel and appropriate equipment should ski there. You can access trail maps, current snow conditions and backcountry equipment rentals at the Breckenridge and Frisco Nordic Centers.

In Keystone, Breckenridge, Frisco and Vail all have a place to enjoy the country side and some even have Nordic Centers and areas along shuttle routes in order to best serve your skiing desires.
