Arapahoe Basin is now officially open for the 2017 / 2018 ski season here in Colorado! Recent big, early season snowfall and cool fall temperatures helped the resort make opening day a reality. Typically the resort is one of the first to open in Colorado, with this year being no exception and opening about a week earlier than they did on 2016’s opening day, October 21. Loveland Ski Area has commented that it shouldn’t be far behind and is already making snow, pushing to get open as soon as possible. Keystone Resort is also now less than a month away from their scheduled opening day on Friday, November 10. Epic Passes are currently on sale, with a variety of options that include skiing and both Arapahoe Basin and Keystone Ski Resorts.
Excited skiers and snowboards were waiting in line well before today’s 9am start time, with some even camping out nearby the evening before to try and get the coveted ‘first chair’ of the season! Many visitors dress up in fun costumes or bright neon ski clothing or even Halloween costumes for opening day. The energy level is high and opening day is nothing short of a fun time.
Get excited for Keystone’s opening day and take advantage of SummitCove Vacation Lodging’s opening weekend lodging sale, offering 50% off lodging at select properties. Opening Day is tons of fun with first tracks and lots of freebies like free coffee, doughnut holes and prizes!

Spend the weekend skiing together, watching football, playing games and enjoying each other’s company. Take advantage of Keystone’s great dining options and instead of spending all of your time in the kitchen, enjoy a great family holiday meal that someone else prepares! Try some of Keystone’s best restaurants such as the Alpenglow Stube, Der Fondue Chessel or the Ski Tip Lodge for a delicious Thanksgiving spread. For something in River Run, check out Zuma Roadhouse. You can also find nice family menus at Bighorn Bistro and the Snake River Saloon in Mountain House.
Support your team by sporting your football jersey out on the slopes! You’ll notice that most people stay in on Thursday, meaning you’ll have the slopes to yourself! If you do want to cook your family meal, you can rest easy knowing that your rental condo is stocked with plenty of cooking supplies to make that perfect meal. We require each of our vacation rentals to have a standard inventory of cooking items such as pots, pans, knives, cutting boards, utensils and more.
Arrive on Wednesday evening and just relax. On Thursday, enjoy a family day together skiing and of course eating a big meal, and then more skiing and more eating leftovers! Friday morning, the diehard shoppers can head into town and enjoy Black Friday Deals at the Silverthorne Outlets Mall! Talk about great deals, the outlets are a shopping lover’s dream come true and every year the deals get better and better! On Saturday, head into River Run Village and attend the Welcome Winter Family Carnival. This free event happens every year and is the official ‘winter kickoff’ party. Enjoy tons of activities and games for the kids, along with live music and winter-themed drink specials for the adults. Watch as the holiday tree lights up and the village lights begin their ‘dance’ for the holiday season. Santa and his reindeer will also be around for visits with the kids.
Create a new tradition this year of skiing with your family on Thanksgiving at Keystone Ski Resort in Colorado! The fresh, crisp mountain air and exercise sure beats a stuffy, crowded house any day! You’ll love waking up early on Thanksgiving morning to hit the slopes. Book a condo at The Springs Condos to be close to the gondola so you can head back to the condo periodically throughout the day for Thanksgiving goodies, such as a slice of pumpkin pie and to check on the score of the big game! If you aren’t into downhill skiing or snowboarding, grab a pair of snow shoes, cross-country nordic skis or ice skates and head outside!
Take advantage of our new lowered Thanksgiving weekend rates. Book early for the best property selections, especially if you are traveling with a large or extended family. We have everything from small ski studio condos, to medium size townhomes up to 5 and 6 bedroom private homes for a large family or even multiple families or a big group of friends!
There are some easy ways you can make your family ski vacation a little more affordable. Check out these tips for saving money on your next family ski vacation here at Keystone Resort.
Take Advantage of Guest Discounts
When you stay with SummitCove, you’ll receive a copy (electronically in your confirmation and a hard copy at check-in) of our Key to Keystone coupon book, chock full of exclusive discounts on everything from your rental car or airport shuttle, your ski rentals, dining, and activities like snowmobiling and zip lining. Be aware and take advantage of these deals and you can save a pretty penny! Some of the best offers include 25% off ski rentals and a free margarita!
Pack a Lunch Eating lunch on the mountain can be very expensive, so why not pack a bagged lunch for your family? Lockers are available inside the mountain lodges, so pack lunches in a backpack and then stash the bag in a locker and head back for it at lunch time. Cold cut sandwiches, string cheese, granola bars, chips and fresh fruit are all great options to bring. Foldable soft sided water bottles are great to fillup on water and save room in your pack or jacket.
Stay Outside of River Run Village
If you don’t mind taking a shuttle to the ski resort, you can often find lodging options that are much more affordable than properties that are within walking distance to the slopes. You’ll also enjoy the fact that these properties tend to be quieter and more spacious and many have their own heated swimming pools and hot tubs.
Purchase Lift Tickets in Advance
Whatever you do, don’t wait until the day you ski to buy a lift ticket! We always recommend purchasing a season pass if you are skiing more than 4 days in a ski season, but if you are buying single day lift tickets, they are always at the lowest rates when you buy them online at least 7 or more days in advance of your first day on the mountain. You’ll also save time by skipping the lift ticket lines!
Do Your Grocery Shopping BEFORE You Get to Keystone
There are some small grocery stores in Keystone, but for the best prices and selection, we highly recommend stopping at a major grocery store before you get into Keystone. The closest option is the City Market (part of the King Soopers brand) located off of Highway 6 in Silverthorne. You will pass right by it, on the left if you take the Dillon / Silverthorne Exit 205 off of I-70 to get to Keystone. There is also a super Target in the area, turn right off of exit 205 and head North about a mile.
Cook Meals at the Condo
Eating out for every meal certainly gets expensive, so plan to make some of your meals at your vacation condo. SummitCove stocks the rental properties with everything you need to prepare a meal, such as pots and pans, knives, cutting boards, utensils and more. There will also be a starter supply of dish soap, a sponge and dishwasher detergent available for you to cleanup. Plan easy to prepare meals like spaghetti, tacos, or roasted chicken with vegetables. You can also get stuff for grab and go breakfasts with muffins, bagels and cream cheese, fresh fruit, granola and yogurt, perfect for a quick bite before heading out to the slopes.
Book Your Condo or Vacation Rental EARLY
SummitCove Lodging offers some great early season deals to kickoff the ski season. Sometimes we even run promotions that have no blackout dates, meaning even those holiday stays can be booked at a discounted rate. You’ll also realize that the best properties get booked first, so the sooner you book, the more likely you are to get the property you want and at the right price. Booking your lodging should be one of your very first steps when planning a ski vacation.
With so many winter activity options available for the whole family in Keystone, it’s a little hard to fit it all into a long 3-day weekend. But if you are lucky enough to get even three days here, you are lucky enough! Here are some ideas on how to maximize three perfect winter days in Keystone on a family ski vacation.
You were able to book a discounted rental car since you booked your lodging with SummitCove Rentals, so pick it up at DIA and then hit the road and head West to Keystone Ski Resort! After a little over an hour of driving, get off of I-70 at the Silverthorne/Dillon exit 205 and stop at the City Market grocery store to pickup some essentials for the weekend like eggs, bagels, soda water, granola bars and sandwich supplies. There is a liquor store next door if you want to pickup a 6-pack of Colorado Craft beer. Now the family is complaining of hunger, so head into one of Summit County’s most well-known restaurants, the Dillon Dam Brewery. After dinner, drive 7 miles further into Keystone and stop by Mountain View Sports to pickup your discounted ski rentals that you reserved in advance. When you’re all fitted up, head across the street to the SummitCove check-in office to pickup your condo keys. After a quick run down on the condo, directions and everything you need to know your stay, you are officially ready to start your vacation! Park the condo in the heated parking garage at The Springs Condos and take the elevator up to your two bedroom vacation rental condo! Turn on the fireplace, unpack the groceries and if you have time, head down to the pool area for a quick dip in the hot tub or steam room or for a round of pool in the lobby. Hit the hay and set your alarm for your first day on the slopes tomorrow!
Having eaten at the Dillon Dam Brewery the night before, you could nibble on leftovers in your River Run Village condominium refrigerator for breakfast. But since you also, smartly, picked up some groceries at the Dillon City Market, whip up your omelets and bacon (or bagels with cream cheese) to fuel your day on the ski slopes at Keystone Resort. Pack a granola bar in your pocket for a mid-morning snack on the mountain.
You’ve registered your kids for a full day of ski school, so walk from your condo to the River Run Village Children’s Ski and Snowboard School, near the gondola. Wave good-bye to the kiddos and enjoy your kid-free day on the slopes until about 3 p.m. You can stop for an amazing lunch and much needed break at the Four-Diamond Alpenglow Stube. Be sure to get a photo from the overlook!
While your husband tosses kids’ wet clothes into the condo’s dryer, scoot out to your late afternoon massage at the spa at the Keystone Lodge and Spa. Chances are, the kids are exhausted — especially if you’re in the high-altitude mountains from sea level! So, take it easy tonight with dinner at a Village restaurant or even get a pizza delivered from the best pizza joint in the county, Pizza 101. If you’re feeling energetic, shuttle over to the Snake River Saloon, your tastebuds will thank you for the extra effort. Hunker down with a family movie before bedtime!
One adult can trot over to Inxpot for lattes, breakfast burritos and cinnamon rolls to go, while the other adult gets the kids up and at ’em. After feasting comfortably in your condo’s dining area, gear up for a family ski day on the slopes. For lunch, everyone will find something that appeals at the Outpost Lodge. Or, plan on packing a lunch with cold cut sandwiches, granola bars, string cheese and apples. You can leave your backpack in a rented locker and head back there for your lunch break. Enjoy the slow green runs of Schoolmarm and the Family Ski Trail for lots of fun that everyone can enjoy.
At 2:30 p.m. make your way over to Adventure Point for your tubing reservations. Try not to shriek louder than your children as you sail down the steep slopes! Stop at the Keystone Kidtopia snow fort to admire the awesome ice sculpture. Kids will have fun throwing snowballs at their parents!
After a relaxing soak in your condo’s outdoor hot tub (or brief late afternoon nap), bundle up for a gondola ride to Der Fondue Chessel, where you’ll gorge yourselves on vegetables and bread dipped in the most savory melted cheese, as well as meat, seafood or still more veggies cooked on your table-top Raclette grill. In between courses, get up and do the chicken dance with the oom-pah-pah band. Save room for a variety of chocolate fondue for dessert. Waddle to the gondola for the ride home.
For your final day, either strap your skis back on if conditions are phenomenal, or consider one of my favorite family activities in the area: dog sledding with Good Times Adventures in Breckenridge (about 30 minutes away). Even young children can drive the dogsled!
This afternoon, head to the Keystone Adventure Center at the Keystone Lodge to rent skates to take some turns on frozen Keystone Lake. (If you prefer to stick closer to “home,” you can also skate at Dercum Square in River Run Village.
To celebrate a successful three full days at Keystone, splurge on a family meal at the Ski Tip Lodge. This former 1800s stagecoach stop is now a cozy bed and breakfast offering a marvelous three-course gourmet dinner menu (with simple kid-pleasing items like burgers and pasta, too). Gathering around the fireplace for an array of delicious desserts is a lovely way to cap off a Keystone getaway!
Summit County or the Colorado Rockies in general, is one of the most active places on the planet whether it is winter or summer. But what happens if you suddenly find yourself unable to participate (perhaps from an injury) or just don’t enjoy or aren’t good at some of its main draws, such as skiing or snowboarding?
The first, easiest, and in my opinion most pleasurable thing to do is explore the dining options in Summit County. Keystone Resort in particular is a leader in this category, whether it is Der Fondue Chessel or The Alpenglow Stube (The highest 4 Diamond Rated Restaurant in North America) on top of the hill, or the Ski Tip Lodge or Keystone Ranch (28 out of 30 by Zagat) you are sure to find some of the best dining options in Summit County. Nearby Frisco, Colorado is no slouch here either with the somewhat unknown Food Hedz, a restaurant started up by a former Keystone Ranch chef, so you know it’s great!
As for local watering holes, in Keystone you will find a great variety of bars including the infamous Kickapoo Tavern. This place is known for their awesome apres-ski patio! Some other options to check out in River Run Village is the 9280′ Taphouse, Zuma Roadhouse and Spoon Cafe. In Mountain House look for the Last Lift Bar, the Snake River Saloon and Dos Locos Mexican Cantina. There are also a number of local breweries in Summit County including the well-known Dam Brewery and Broken Compass.
For those of us who live here, we tend to forget what an inescapably beautiful location it is. As is such I got back to an old college pastime and broke out the camera and started snapping away. The constantly changing weather conditions can often change how a photo presents from moment to moment. I would imagine if I could paint, it would be quite incredible too.
There are plenty of options for taking specialty classes at CMC as well, such as an Asian Cuisine Cooking Course or enjoying a night of pottery painting at Ready, Paint, Fire over in Lakeside Village.
If shopping is your thing, The Outlets in Silverthorne are a formidable opponent for even the most seasoned shopping enthusiast. There are some great deals here and name brands like American Eagle, J Crew, Crocs, Bath and Body Works, The Gap, The Colorado Store and more. The Outlets are just about a 10 minute drive into Silverthorne from Keystone Resort. You can also head to the spa for an amazing day of relaxation and pampering.
One of the other things that can really captivate is the live music here in Summit County. From the Snake River Saloon in Keystone to the Motherloaded Tavern in Breckenridge to SilverHeels or the Barkley Ballroom in Frisco, live music is a staple of any small town or community and there is no short supply here. In the summer, Keystone Resort is home to some of the best festivals in the nation that bring in huge music acts, as well as some not as well-known, up and coming acts that you will love and they are all free to attend! There are also weekly summers at the Dillon Amphitheater and Frisco’s Historical Park with their ‘Concerts in the Park’. The best part is that you can find FREE LIVE MUSIC almost any day of the week here in Summit County.
Depending upon your injury, condition, or lack of skill that is preventing you from enjoying the more ‘hardcore’ activities here, there are other options that aren’t quite as physical. Ice Fishing is a great unique activity to partake in although it is catch and release. If you are able to sustain some degree of physicality and want something a little more adventurous you can also try Dogsledding or Snowmobiling. There are even places to Zipline in the winter for the adrenaline junkies, at Top of the Rockies Zip Line. Nordic skiing and snowshoeing are also great ways to get outside during the winter that don’t require as much skill or commitment. Snow tubing and ice skating are also very popular family activities that are right here in Keystone!
Lastly, if you arrive in one piece, but happen to be unfortunate enough to injure yourself while on vacation you can rest easy, we have some of the best Orthopaedic Surgeons and Physical Therapists in the world right here. Vail-Summit Orthopaedics and Steadman Hawkins are among the world leaders in sports medicine.
There are so many things to do here in Keystone in addition to skiing and snowboarding. Plan your winter family vacation in Keystone today and you can rest assured you will have plenty of fun things to do! You may even end up adding additional nights to your stay when you realize how many things you will want to pack into each day!
Christmas time in Keystone is nothing short of magical. The white snowy backdrop, holiday lights and music with the cheery feel make for a family holiday that you won’t forget. Keystone will always deliver that perfect holiday feeling, but what about the condo you rent? Here are my top 3 favorite properties to rent for a family vacation over the holidays that really bring out that dreamy holiday, cozy feeling and bring your family together.
The location of this property alone puts it in class of its own. Located out in the Keystone Ranch area, it is a bit away from the ski slopes, but allows you to enjoy the scenic 10 minute drive and take in the beautiful of the open fields and meadows with surrounding mountain views in the Keystone Ranch area. This log-home style property is big and grand, welcoming you with a huge second story porch and stone pillars. As you walk into this property, the vaulted ceilings hit you with a super-spacious feel and everything screams GRAND, like the large exposed wood beams that are seen throughout the home and beautiful wood beam staircase. The furnishings are nice, but not ‘too nice’ – you’ll feel very comfortable relaxing here. A large elk with a big rack is mounted on the wall and really adds to the mountain feel of this private home in Keystone. A large, open kitchen with chef grade appliances will make it easy to prepare that family meal. A large stone hearth fireplace in the grand room will warm you up on that snowy night. Stare out at the mountains through the large picture window. There are also multiple fireplaces in other rooms of this house. Spacious cozy bedrooms and a private hot tub top off this property as a place that any family would love to spend some together at during the holidays on a mountain ski trip.
This 3 bedroom, 3 bath condo is located in River Run Village and has an amazing ski slope view. Hardwood floors are a nice upgrade with a cozy sectional sofa, large flatscreen TV and plenty of seating in the living room. The best part of this room? The coffee table – it’s a working mini foosball table that will keep kids (or those ‘kids at heart’) occupied for hours. I can just see our family curling up here on the sofa for a game night or movie by the warm fireplace. The location is perfect, we can walk around the village, to dinner, to go shopping, ice skating or just to hang out by the gas firepit in the village. Then we can head to the heated pool which features a WATER SLIDE and two hot tubs to warm up in as the snow falls. This great building also has a steam room, kids playhouse with a kids castle and movie theatre room with comfy reclining leather seats and huge flat screen TV! The gondola is just yards away to make carrying our ski gear to the slopes a breeze. I can picture it now… a quiet Christmas morning on the slopes, followed by a warm meal, opening a few presents and then a soak in the hot tub, enjoying our family time together.
This 3 bedroom, 3 bath condo is located in North Keystone and everything about it screams MOUNTAINS! This property is a multi-level condo that has some great features like vaulted ceilings and lots of windows. The main level has unbeatable views outside of the lodgepole pines and snowy meadows and would be great to sit and watch the snow fall on a winter evening. Wood floors grace most of the main level and the living room has a fireplace. Tons of little details add to the mountain charm of this condo, like the forest themed iron fireplace cover, moose on the couch pillows and the gorgeous staircase which has a tree and leaf theme. The bedrooms all feature cozy quilts and really will make you feel at home. The master bedroom has a built in wall gas fireplace, perfect to curl up by on a winter night or to warm you up in the morning before crawling out of bed to head to the slopes. There is a great upper level balcony at this property if you happen to get a warm afternoon, get out and take in the fresh air. The kitchen is spacious and features stainless steel appliances and beautiful granite countertops. I would love to take my family here for a wonderful holiday break at Keystone!
The holidays are one of the absolute best times to be in the mountains. There’s nothing better than soft snow falling in a mountain village as you stroll through the shops and take in the cool mountain air, with the glimmering excitement of a waking up to a powder day, especially on Christmas morning. Holiday decorations and lights amplify the charm, with the sparkling snowflakes adding to the magical feeling in the air.
If you’ve never visited Keystone Resort over the holidays, you might not yet know what you are missing. Forget Disney World! Take your family to the mountains this year for their winter break getaway, where you can enjoy skiing, snow tubing, ice skating, snowmobiling, zip lining… the list goes on and on. Most kids will even just have a blast swimming in the pool while it’s snowing or playing board games together as a family. Don’t worry, the pools are heated year-round and it’s not as cold as it sounds! Give your family the gift of experiences and memories this year that will last a lifetime. Unwrap Christmas morning with a fresh ski wax and cup of hot chocolate out on the ski slopes.
Keystone hosts tons of fun events and activities for the holidays including the ‘Welcome Winter Family Carnival’ and ‘Pancakes with Santa’. Santa will be around with his reindeer throughout the holiday season, to meet kids and hear about their Christmas wishes! There are also fireworks every Saturday with Keystone Kidtopia, once the season gets into swing. Daily Kidtopia events will be happening with fun and free things for the kids to enjoy, such as parades, free cookies, arts and crafts and more. In mid-December, the Snow Fort opens, a larger than life snow castle that kids can explore, play at and have snowball fights! Take the kids ice skating at the rink at Dercum Square, near Buffalo Lodge, Dakota and Expedition Station Condos.
There are places that will deliver a Christmas Tree to your condo or private home rental, complete with lights and decorations! Your holiday traditions can continue in the mountains. Spend Christmas Eve together, sipping hot chocolate next to the fireplace. This holiday memory will be one that stands out from the rest and you’ll never forget. Book your holiday stay in Keystone today!
