Disc Golf (or sometimes known as Frisbee Golf) is a popular Summit County activity with two disc golf courses located here in the County. Disc Golf is similar in many ways to golf but much less expensive and easier to learn. It involves throwing a frisbee-like disc at the ‘hole’, which is a hoop with a metal net, each hole offers its different challenges. You will need to bring your own discs which can be purchased at any of the sporting goods stores in the area. Disc golf in Summit County is a great way to enjoy being outside, getting some exercise, and soaking up the spectacular mountain scenery. Some other great features of Disc Golf are that most courses are free, dog-friendly, and it’s BYOB.
Lake Dillon Disc Golf Course is the newest golf course in Summit County and fairly challenging. This golf course opened in 2014 and is 18 holes of rugged play. There is steep elevation change on about half the holes so make sure you wear good shoes. The first tee is a 10 minute hike from the parking lot. These baskets are static so it’s the same course every time.
Local Directions: Take exit 205 from I-70 then turn east toward Keystone. Located between Dillon and Keystone off of Highway 6. Turn left onto Cemetery Road, then make the first right to the parking area.
Peak One Disc Golf Course is the other Summit County 18 hole Disc Golf Course which locals have been enjoying since 1997 out in the Frisco Peninsula Area. This course is a bit different than Lake Dillon in that it is a relatively flat course and the baskets are moved every few weeks so the course is always changing. This is a great course for a beginner although it’s also a favorite for experienced players.
Local Directions: Located in the Frisco Peninsula Rec. Area. Take I-70, exit at Frisco, exit 203, take Hwy 9 south to a left at Frisco Nordic Center. Go under the sign for the Frisco Peninsula Recreation Area and follow the signs to disc golf. Walk along baseball outfield fence and veer left to hole 1.
Make sure you bring discs, sunscreen, water and wear good athletic shoes. Expect play to take at least 2 – 3 hours.
