The Last Bits of Snow on North Peak

The snow is almost gone on the peaks here at Keystone Resort. This is a shot of North Peak from the top of Dercum Mountain taken last Friday during the Friday Afternoon Club.  Every Friday all summer long you can enjoy views like this with free gondola rides from 1 – close.  Try out one of the hiking paths located on top of the mountain or just kick back with a cold beverage in a lounge chair while you take in the live music and sunshine!  Bands start at 4 pm on Fridays.

Summer will fly by though, so get to Keystone soon before the snow starts again!

Summer in Keystone

The Facts on FAC at Keystone Resort

What’s the buzz on the FAC? Keystone’s Friday Afternoon Club takes place every Friday Afternoon all summer long between the dates of June 1st- September 1st. There are a ton of discounted food and drink specials, fun outdoor games and live music, not to forget the free scenic gondola ride!  Listen and boogie down to live music while watching the sun set behind the mountains.  Some of the activities include bocce ball, corn hole and ladder ball and can be checked out through the Overlook Grill, free of charge.  Kids will enjoy the free games with their parents too! There is also a slackline course and plenty of hiking trails at the top of the mountain, begging to be explored.  Stay late to watch the sun go down- nothing beats seeing a Colorado sunset from the top of Dercum Mountain!

Take the scenic gondola ride up to the fun and entertainment and enjoy the beautiful views of Keystone. The free gondola rides start at 1pm and the live music starts at 4pm, with the gondola running until close.  Pick up your free foot passenger ticket at the ticket office, located just across from the River Run Gondola and you’ll be on your way.

If you are looking for a fun activity for your whole family or group to enjoy, this one is highly recommended! Save some money on the lift tickets and enjoy the free entertainment and fun by going up the mountain on Friday afternoons.  This is the perfect way to kickoff your summer weekend mountain getaway!  Book a room with SummitCove Lodging in River Run and leave your car parked the whole weekend.  Enjoy shops, restaurants, the Keystone Bike Path, the Snake River, hiking trails and more all just outside your doorstep!

Friday Afternoon Club at Keystone Resort

When a friend’s parents were recently in town visiting, they looked to us to be their activities directors.  One of the first things that came to mind was the Friday Afternoon Club.  Free gondola rides, live music and activities at the top of the mountain?  Sounds like alot of fun!

We headed into River Run Village around 4pm on Friday and picked up our free gondola tickets from the ticket office and hopped on.  From the start, you immediately start seeing all of of the great views as you begin to head up the mountain- the surrounding trees and hills, bikers heading down the mountain and as you get closer to the top, views of the Dillon reservoir. When we reached the top and walked off, we took in the gorgeous views of Keystone’s iconic North Peak and Breckenridge Ski Resort and snapped some group photos with the incredible backdrops.

Views of North Peak from the top of Dercum Mountain

Off to our right, we see the slack line park and hear the sounds of the live band jamming! This week’s act was Funky Johnson, a local Summit County band that plays a great mix of fun cover songs that are perfect to dance to.  The band plays at the top of the mountain on a stage that is set with an incredible view of the lake as their backdrop. Some people are dancing, others are at picnic tables or relaxing in Adirondack chairs taking it all in.

A free concert with a view with Funky Johnson at Keystone’s Friday Afternoon Club

We decided to grab a drink and head to the cornhole pits to play a few fun games. After 2 rounds of the girls beating the guys and hearing some great tunes, we decided to head back down the mountain and enjoy a nice dinner in the village.

Everyone had a great time at the Friday Afternoon Club and the best part was that it was free to attend! If you are visiting Keystone or even just a local looking for some Friday Afternoon Fun, you should certainly check out this fun weekly event here at Keystone Resort!

Steve Mudflap McGrew:
comedian Steve McGrew’s takes on the lighter side of life. Born in Tulsa, OK, but raised near the Houston area, McGrew began his career at the beginning of the 80’s, working as an editorial cartoonist for the Houston Chronicle during the day and performing standup at night, early on, he shared stages with comedians like Bill Hicks and Sam Kinison at Houston’s Comedy Workshop Club. After about five years, McGrew decided to concentrate on comedy full – time and quickly became a popular attraction around the South. From there he went on to appear on virtually every cable show devoted to standup comedy, including An Evening at the Improv, Caroline’s Comedy Hour, Showtime’s Full Frontal Comedy, and Comedy on the Road, among others. He also showed up on MTV, VH1, and TNN, as a finalist on Star Search, and on the Bob and Tom morning radio show.
Additionally, McGrew opened concerts for several rock and country artists, including Dolly Parton, Tanya Tucker, Wynonna Judd, Jerry Lee Lewis, the Doobie Brothers, and The Beach Boys. As he grew more ambitious, McGrew put together a series of one-man shows – including a stage piece based on his experiences as a divorced father – that allowed him to explore different comic territory. Keystone Enduro Race Series #3
WHAT IS ENDURO? Enduro is a relatively new format which appears to have taken some inspiration from both car rally and motorbike enduro racing. Mountain bike enduro is essentially the competitive side of the mountain biking format often referred to today as “All-Mountain”. Due to this eclectic combination of attributes, enduro racing is increasingly recognized as the truest test of the all-round mountain biker. The Mass Start will take place on at the top of the Peru Chair (pleaser reference a Keystone Trail Map for directions). From there, participants will be required to climb (via bike) up the P-3 Trail. Once they have achieved the climb, a judge will mark the climb completed as the participant moves on to descend the mountain on a course of their choosing. All participants must stay to a maintained Keystone Resort Trail as they descend. The Race finish line is indicated with signage and a chalk line at the base of River Run Face, adjacent to the Summit Express Lift and at the South end of the Pedestrian Bridge. Races start at 6pm and are categorized between Men & Women, with the top 3 from each group be awarded with cash prizes.

Friday, 8/17/2012
Keystone Ascent Race Series #3
The Mass Start will take place on River Run Road, directly North of the Keystone Sports Sprung Tent. From there, a Neutral Start will ride to East Keystone Road continuing on to Jack Straw Road to the Summit of Dercum mountain, continuing to the North East side of the Summit House and wrapping around the North West side of the Summit house. The Race finish line is indicated with signage and a chalk line. WHAT IS ASCENT? An Ascent Race is an uphill race against the clock (also referred to as “the race of truth”). Winning depends only on each rider’s strength and endurance, and not on help provided by team-mates and others riding ahead and creating a slipstream. Starting times are at equal intervals, usually one or two minutes apart. The rider with the fastest time is declared the winner. Race starts at 6pm.
