What is a Colorado Ski Passport?
For the past 16 years, over 200,000 families have participated in Colorado Ski Country USA’s 5th Grade Passport Program. The program was established in 1996 and more than 200,000 kids have participated in the program since then. This year, the 5th Grade Passport Program provides participants with three free days of skiing or snowboarding at 20 different resorts. Kids can choose to ski or snowboard all 60 of the days or just a few, but either way the 5th Grade Passport is still the best value in Colorado. Once you’ve applied, you just present your child’s passport at the ticket window, and it’s that easy! The ticket office supplies your child with a one day lift ticket and punches your passport. Unfortunately Keystone is not on the resort list this year, but nearby Arapahoe Basin does accept the Passports!
The goal of this program is to make skiing more accessible for those who are lucky enough to live in Colorado. It also focuses on healthy youth, by providing a fun way for kids to stay physically active, even in the colder winter months when they might not otherwise want to play outside.
2012-13 participating resorts for the 5th & 6th Passport Program will be: Arapahoe Basin, Aspen Highlands, Aspen Mountain, Buttermilk, Copper Mountain, Crested Butte, Eldora, Howelson Hill, Loveland, Monarch Mountain, Powderhorn, Purgatory/Durango, Ski Cooper, Snowmass, Ski Granby Ranch (previously Sol Vista Basin), Steamboat, Sunlight, Telluride, Winter Park, and Wolf Creek.
PLEASE NOTE that Vail, Beaver Creek, Breckenridge and Keystone are NOT participating in the programs this year and your 5th & 6th Grade Passports will NOT be valid at those resorts. The 6th Grade Passport is non-refundable. To apply, you must apply online or send application/items for the pass through the mail. Your child’s pass will come to you standard first class mail.
Deadline for submitting applications is January 31, 2013.
6th Grade Passport:
If your child is in 6th grade, there is still a great deal available for them to get a great deal on skiing or riding this season! The 6th Grade Colorado Ski Passport Program provides participants with four days of skiing or snowboarding at each of the 20 member resorts for a just $99. That amounts to 80 awesome days on the slopes for a mere $1.25 per day, you will not find a better deal!
First Class Learn to Ski or Ride Program:
During the entire month of January, the First Class program offers 5th graders the opportunity to learn how to ski or snowboard. Children who have neither experienced skiing nor snowboarding, and are enrolled in the 5th Grade Passport Program, have the opportunity to receive one free beginner lesson and rental package. Lessons are a great way to help your child gain the knowledge and confidence they need to become successful on the slopes.
Don’t miss out on this great opportunity for your child this ski season, apply for the Colorado Ski Passport today! A few of the leaves in Summit County have already started changing colors, meaning Fall is on it’s way.. and even better, that Winter will be here before we know it! Fall is an incredible time to visit Keystone; the summer crowds have dwindled and it feels as if you have the whole resort to yourself. Many of the restaurants in Summit County offer 2-for-1 deals, making it easy to enjoy a gourmet meal at just a fraction of the price you would normally pay. The temperatures are cool, making it the ideal weather for hiking and biking. Equipment shops start running fall sales to get rid of last year’s equipment, meaning you can receive savings up to 70% off on a new pair of skis, boots, googles, and other gear. The quiet and relaxed atmosphere during the off season is a nice change from the normal hustle and bustle at the resort. You can also visit some of the Fall themed events in Summit County, including Wine in the Pines, Oktoberfest, Fall for the Arts, Fall Fest and more.
Probably the biggest reason to come though is for the Colorado Fall Colors. Keystone is home to Aspens which change to brilliant gold and orange hues, creating hills of gorgeous colors. Although the exact dates cannot be predicted, typically September is the best month to view the colors. There are numerous trails in the Keystone and Montezuma areas that offer superb color viewing opportunities, including the Peru Creek trail and Keystone Gulch area. If you have never tried cross country mountain biking, it is a great way to cover alot of terrain and really submerse yourself in the beautiful scenery. There are many trails that are considered beginner level to get started on. You can also ride your bike up one of the scenic passes such as Loveland or Hoosier. Another way to view the colors is to take a scenic drive on one of the many beautiful roads in Summit County such as Montezuma Road, The Top of the Rockies Scenic Byway over Independence Pass, or the Copper Minturn Loop.
SummitCove is sticking with the 2-for-1 theme and offering A FREE Night, when you buy one night from September 10 until October 31st, at participating properties. Experience the colors from the balcony view shown above at Expedition Station or be tucked away in the woods at Trapper’s Crossing Townhomes. You can’t pass up these amazing prices during your Fall Color Viewing Tour! Take a break from the city life and experience the brilliance and beauty of the Colorado wilderness during one of its most beautiful seasons!
So you are thinking of taking your special someone on a romantic getaway weekend in the mountains. Keystone offers fine dining, plenty of activities, incredible scenery and some beautiful properties to make your stay perfect. Here’s a few tips to make it unforgettable!
1. Call for Help! Our Vacation Planners know our properties inside and out, meaning they can help you find that cozy love nest you know your girlfriend or loved one will love and also give you a great deal. Yes a private jacuzzi in the condo is do-able and of course you need a place that has incredible views. Tell us your story and you will find that we are willing to go the extra mile for you, maybe you can even convince us to have a bottle of champagne waiting in your condo when you arrive.
2. Plan, but don’t over plan. Sure the weekend will require some planning, booking a condo, making dinner reservations, etc. but you don’t want to OVER plan and leave no room for spontaneity. Maybe you decide last minute to stop and hike up that trail you just passed on your bikes or that you want to try horseback riding! Make a few plans, but leave some free time so you have flexibility.
3. What to do? Well every girl (and guy) is different and enjoy different things. Does she love the outdoors? How about a Ride the Pass bike tour down Vail Pass or a hike on Sapphire Point to take in incredible views? Rent a kayak on Lake Dillon or schedule a tee time at the Ranch or River golf courses. Shopping Fanatic? Visit the outlet malls in Silverthorne and she can shop til her hearts content. Other activities unique to the area are gondola rides, renting paddle boats on Keystone Lake, a show at the Lake Dillon Theatre CO, a trip to one of the local breweries or how about a couples massage at Serenity Spa or the Keystone Lodge & Spa. The Lake Dillon Water Taxi offers inexpensive rides on the Lake, perfect to enjoy the water and views. Take a scenic drive up to Loveland Pass or Baldy Mountain in Breckenridge to take in the views. There are also some more traditional activities such as the movie theater or bowling alley.
4. The secret to her heart is through the stomach! Yes, a delicious dinner! Prepare a candlelit dinner in the condo (or even order delivery!) with wine and candles or take her out for a nice, romantic dinner. If you really want to blow her away, take her UP to the top of the mountain by scenic gondola ride to either the Alpenglow Stube or Der Fondue Chessel, where the views are just as amazing as the food. Some other great Keystone restaurants include the Snake River Saloon, Wolf Rock Steakhouse and the Ski Tip Lodge.
5. Surprise her! Sure it might be hard to surprise her with the trip itself, but make a point to add in a surprise or something special over the weekend. Have flowers delivered to the room or pack supplies to make a quick breakfast in bed with fresh fruit, muffins, and mimosas. The gesture can be small but the reaction will be big!
The most important thing is to have fun and stay true to yourself. Don’t stress over making everything perfect… let the beautiful mountain scenery and our amazing staff help you with that and just roll with it. Pick activities that you know you know she will enjoy, but don’t be afraid to try something new either. Keystone is the perfect place to host a romantic mountain getaway! Check out Riverbank Lodge 2903, which features beautiful slate floors, incredible views and a private jacuzzi or Lake Shore 1540 has amazing views of the Lake, both are great choices for a romantic retreat!

Keystone Resort is located in scenic Summit County, Colorado, which is home to SEVEN ski resorts within a 40 mile radius. Purchase an EPIC Season Pass and receive unlimited access to Keystone, Arapahoe Basin, Breckenridge, Vail, and Beaver Creek- let’s not forget their west coast resorts Heavenly, Northstar, and Kirkwood. For $659, pass holders get unlimited access to all of these resorts- no blackout dates and in addition they receive 6 Ski with a Friend Passes. Keystone Resort is centrally located in the middle of it all; just a short drive from Arapahoe Basin and Breckenridge, and with Vail and Beaver Creek just another 30 miles down the highway, it’s the perfect place to host your Colorado ski vacation!
The Bottle Shop is a new boutique wine, beer and spirits store that opened earlier this year in the SummitCove neighborhood near Keystone Resort. The owners, Ben and Janesse Brown, have a chalkboard set up in the store so customers can make recommendations for wine or beer brands they’d like to see and they also offer a ‘make your own six-pack,’ so folks can take home a mix of their favorite brews. There is a big emphasis on local and Colorado brands across the whole spectrum of inventory. Brown says the prices are good: because the shop is located in unincorporated Summit County, it isn’t affected by additional town or resort taxes. The shop is mostly a wine and beer store; only 20 percent of the floor space is dedicated to liquor. It has nearly 200 wines to choose from — which the Browns picked out after consulting with a sommelier — and room for another 100 after community input starts rolling in.
The Bottle Shop proudly hosts ‘3rd Thursdays’ each month, in which visitors can sample wines, beers, and spirits from 4-7pm on the third Thursday of each month. The Bottle Shop partners with other community businesses to bring the properly paired garnish with your wine (think cheese, bread, and chocolate!). Third Thursdays will feature a local “somel-yeahs!” – community members sharing their “expert” views on the featured wine – either a new favorite or old friend. It is a terrific time to gather as a community for some sublime wine and good company! The next Third Thursday will take place on August 16, 2012. If you are looking for a property nearby, check out the West Keystone area, which is just a little over a mile from The Bottle Shop. Soda Springs 1917 or Pines 2136 are both available for rental in August- rent a bike and ride to the wine tasting!

About the Acts:
Steve Mudflap McGrew: comedian Steve McGrew’s takes on the lighter side of life. Born in Tulsa, OK, but raised near the Houston area, McGrew began his career at the beginning of the 80’s, working as an editorial cartoonist for the Houston Chronicle during the day and performing standup at night, early on, he shared stages with comedians like Bill Hicks and Sam Kinison at Houston’s Comedy Workshop Club. After about five years, McGrew decided to concentrate on comedy full – time and quickly became a popular attraction around the South. From there he went on to appear on virtually every cable show devoted to standup comedy, including An Evening at the Improv, Caroline’s Comedy Hour, Showtime’s Full Frontal Comedy, and Comedy on the Road, among others. He also showed up on MTV, VH1, and TNN, as a finalist on Star Search, and on the Bob and Tom morning radio show.
Additionally, McGrew opened concerts for several rock and country artists, including Dolly Parton, Tanya Tucker, Wynonna Judd, Jerry Lee Lewis, the Doobie Brothers, and The Beach Boys. As he grew more ambitious, McGrew put together a series of one-man shows – including a stage piece based on his experiences as a divorced father – that allowed him to explore different comic territory. McGrew made a string of recordings available on the Laughing Hyena label, and then switched to Uproar for his most widely distributed album to date, 1999’s Too Much Man for Just One Woman and Other Lies. http://www.myspace.com/stevemcgrew.

House of Walker Scotch Dinner at Alpenglow Stube

This special event had to be canceled this winter due to bad weather, so the Alpenglow Stube team are bringing it back on August 11, 2012. Keystone Enduro Race Series #3
WHAT IS ENDURO? Enduro is a relatively new format which appears to have taken some inspiration from both car rally and motorbike enduro racing. Mountain bike enduro is essentially the competitive side of the mountain biking format often referred to today as “All-Mountain”. Due to this eclectic combination of attributes, enduro racing is increasingly recognized as the truest test of the all-round mountain biker. The Mass Start will take place on at the top of the Peru Chair (pleaser reference a Keystone Trail Map for directions). From there, participants will be required to climb (via bike) up the P-3 Trail. Once they have achieved the climb, a judge will mark the climb completed as the participant moves on to descend the mountain on a course of their choosing. All participants must stay to a maintained Keystone Resort Trail as they descend. The Race finish line is indicated with signage and a chalk line at the base of River Run Face, adjacent to the Summit Express Lift and at the South end of the Pedestrian Bridge. Races start at 6pm and are categorized between Men & Women, with the top 3 from each group be awarded with cash prizes.
Keystone Ascent Race Series #3
The Mass Start will take place on River Run Road, directly North of the Keystone Sports Sprung Tent. From there, a Neutral Start will ride to East Keystone Road continuing on to Jack Straw Road to the Summit of Dercum mountain, continuing to the North East side of the Summit House and wrapping around the North West side of the Summit house. The Race finish line is indicated with signage and a chalk line. WHAT IS ASCENT? An Ascent Race is an uphill race against the clock (also referred to as “the race of truth”). Winning depends only on each rider’s strength and endurance, and not on help provided by team-mates and others riding ahead and creating a slipstream. Starting times are at equal intervals, usually one or two minutes apart. The rider with the fastest time is declared the winner. Race starts at 6pm.

The event will have a cash bar and tickets can be purchased at the door; $15 adults, kids under 5 are free. Doors open at 7:30pm.
