Ahhh, the crisp air with a touch of wind brushing across my face as I step outside on a beautiful clear morning. “Nothing compares to a morning like this in the high-country,” I tell myself as I take a second to gaze upon the gleaming snow-covered caps of the distant mountains and the beautiful bright orange aspen leaves, dusted with snow. It feels as if the first snow of the season was just yesterday… Well, the first snow of the season WAS yesterday and I couldn’t be more excited! Memories of mid-season powder days are beginning to flood my thoughts but this is just the beginning! The first snowstorm of the year brought 8 inches of fresh snow to Keystone, to add to the mountains of man-made snow that has been piling up over the past few weeks.
As the seasons shift and the temperatures change, Keystone is gearing up for an EPIC winter! Now that the snow is falling, the rumor mill is churning. When is Keystone’s opening day for the 19/ 20 ski season?
Well what do we know to be true? Keystone has recently upgraded and added to its snow making equipment inventory and has already been making snow for the past couple of weeks. Today’s snowstorm is now bringing in some significant additional natural snow to that mix and it is starting to build a nice base on the upper half of the mountain. We know Keystone opened last year on November 7th and in previous years on November 10, 2017 and November 18, 2016. But, now that Keystone is competing with Loveland and Arapahoe Basin for first chair of the season in Colorado (and the country!), the race to open is on!
We also know is you can go to the Keystone lift ticket website and purchase lift tickets beginning October 25th, 2019. There are also some kickoff events scheduled starting as early as October 26th, 2019, the Halloween Costume Contest at Summit House! So, hopefully that points to a sooner rather than later opening day!
Although nothing has been officially announced, this rumor monger believes we can get our skis tuned up and book a room with SummitCove Vacation Lodging for first chair in the next week or two! We know that early season stays offer the lowest rates of the ski season and it is a great time to visit the high country! See you on the ski slopes!

Keystone Ski Resort has received another early season snow storm. We woke up to fresh snow on the ground, with everything covered in a blanket of white. More snow is expected through the morning, with a high of only 35 degrees expected for today and then it will clear up this afternoon. Although this storm didn’t bring as much as the last storm, which dropped a foot of fresh snow in some places, the cool temps and fresh snow certainly help with snowmaking efforts.
Loveland Ski Resort opened this morning for the 17 / 18 winter ski season and Arapahoe Basin has already been open for 1 week, opening last Friday, October 13. Keystone Resort is soon to follow, with their scheduled opening day on Friday, November 10.

Arapahoe Basin is now officially open for the 2017 / 2018 ski season here in Colorado! Recent big, early season snowfall and cool fall temperatures helped the resort make opening day a reality. Typically the resort is one of the first to open in Colorado, with this year being no exception and opening about a week earlier than they did on 2016’s opening day, October 21. Loveland Ski Area has commented that it shouldn’t be far behind and is already making snow, pushing to get open as soon as possible. Keystone Resort is also now less than a month away from their scheduled opening day on Friday, November 10. Epic Passes are currently on sale, with a variety of options that include skiing and both Arapahoe Basin and Keystone Ski Resorts. Excited skiers and snowboards were waiting in line well before today’s 9am start time, with some even camping out nearby the evening before to try and get the coveted ‘first chair’ of the season! Many visitors dress up in fun costumes or bright neon ski clothing or even Halloween costumes for opening day. The energy level is high and opening day is nothing short of a fun time.
