Thanks to Lake Dillon, water sports is a big reason visitors come to Summit County in the summer. The popularity of stand-up paddleboarding has been growing in Summit County with plenty of rentals, lessons, and tours available on Lake Dillon, Keystone Lake and the Upper Colorado River.
Stand-up paddleboarding on Lake Dillon is recommended either in the morning or later afternoon when the lake is usually calm. The scenery of Lake Dillon has breathtaking with views of Buffalo Mountain, the Gore Range and the Ten Mile Range. You may also be lucky enough to spot a moose, bald eagle, or deer while out on the lake. While you’re enjoying the scenery, stand-up paddleboarding will give you a full body workout. The boards are even stable enough for you to do your yoga routine.
You can also get a little more whitewater action by paddleboarding the upper Colorado River. The Colorado River has class I and II rapids and has different sections to match different abilities. There are companies that have tours and instruction which is recommended especially for your first time on the river.
Keystone Lake’s Adventure Center is another great place to learn how to paddle. The lake is small and warm so it’s perfect for children or beginners. $25 for a half hour rental and $40 for an hour.
Lake Dillon has two marinas – one in Dillon and one in Frisco. Both of these marina’s rent hard-shell stand up paddle boards.
- Frisco Marina – reserve in advance, kid-specific SUPs, 2 hour rental $35, each additional hour $10
- Dillon Marina – Dillon uses Stand Up Paddle outfitter – 2 hour rental $45
Stand Up Paddle offers tours and lessons plus rentals from both the Frisco and Dillon Marina – 2 hour rental $45, lessons are $89 for 2 ½ hours for beginners and intermediates and $130 for 2 ½ hours for advanced. Stand Up Paddle also offers whitewater tours on the Colorado River.
Adventure Paddle Tours also offers lessons out of the Frisco Marina. 1 ½ hour lesson $70 and a 2 ½ hour tour $120
