When you think about Summit County in the winter and the spring, chances are that spring skiing is the first thing to come to mind. Does Ice Hockey come to mind? Well, it should! Each year near the end of March or beginning of April, local hockey players and former pros participate in the Summit Hockey Classic at Breckenridge's Stephen C. West Ice Arena. This is no ordinary tournament, as it is a charity benefit event for Summit Youth Hockey, the local youth hockey organization. Through the years players such as Milan Hejduk, Pierre Turgeon, Ken Klee amongst others join local players to raise money to further youth hockey in Summit County. For 3 years in a row, SummitCove Lodging has been a proud sponsor of the hockey classic.
This year the hockey classic will be played on Friday and Saturday March 27th and 28th, 2015 in Breckenridge starting at 6pm.
Format 2 games are played on Friday between the 4 teams, who are sponsored by Vail-Summit Orthopaedics, Copper Mountain, Peak One Surgery Center, and Beaver Run Resort.
Schedule Friday Night, March 27: 6 pm: Vail-Summit Orthopaedics vs. Copper Mountain 8 pm: Beaver Run vs Peak One Surgery Center
Saturday Night, March 28: The winners of the Friday night games play Saturday in the late game at 8 pm and the losers of the first matchups play each other in the early game at 5:30. In between the 2 games on Saturday, there will be a shootout in which the 12 celebrity players will take turns shooting on all of the Hockey Classic Goalies.
Support a Good Cause Summit Youth Hockey is a Non-Profit Organization which provides the only hockey playing opportunity within Summit County. Summit Hockey provides opportunities for youth of every age and gender to play both recreationally and competitively against teams across the state of Colorado and some of the money raised goes towards helping to enable underprivileged youth to play the sport.
Celebrities Each year the Summit Hockey classic features former Professional and Division 1 players in conjunction with many of Summit Hockey's Coaches. This year some of the headliners are former NHLers: Scott Parker, Derek Armstrong, Rick Berry, Phil Crowe, Brad Smyth, Dave Feamster, and Darwin McCutcheon.
Cost to attend the games is $5 per day. This is a pretty tough deal to beat for an entire evening of entertainment and fun. There is food and beverage for purchase inside, and really, what else are you going to be doing with your Friday or Saturday night?
SummitCove Connection SummitCoves very own Owner Representative and Manager Wren Arbuthnot will be playing in goal in the tournament for the fifth consecutive year.
